Monthly Artist Showcase- HELEN ZARIN

SPIRIT CC

Spirit CC

Zarin – The name instinctively provokes the imagination with the mystery of antiquity, of an illustrious by-gone age. Zarin’s paintings coerce the viewer to engage her works and command one’s attention.  The swaths of bold colors tempestuously sweeping across each canvas coalesce in the finality of her penultimate and ultimate brush strokes into work of compelling sophistication. Zarin hails from the ancient metropolis of Shiraz, Persia, which is home to poets, writers, architects, gardens, world famous pistachios, and the internationally acclaimed Shiraz red win grape, which has been transplanted into the world’s most famous vineyards.  Zarin’s varied influences of her native land inspire canvases with a cacophony of color, but with a distinct focus in mind.

Untitled        It is a difficult and fine line to walk delving into impressionistic and abstract elements flavored with intellectual concepts of music, dance, literature, history, landscapes, and interiors.  Zarin fearlessly treads into these realms  without trepidation and exults in the struggle. Emotional concepts of love, intimacy, joy, angst, detachment, solitude, and indifference all exist on Zarin’s palette that she masterfully pours onto her canvases.  The viewer is left intellectually and emotionally drained with this confrontation. Growing up as an Orthodox Jew in a Muslin land of Sharia Law presents its own set of challenges to Zarin.

LAMOUR XXXIVMuslim Koranic morality bans alcohol in all its forms as “hiram” (evil, sin).  Just as the revered centuries old Shiraz grape stands in opposition to the prevailing culture in its venerable, unchanged, primordial state, Zarin emulates its tenacity and conviction to exist and prosper.  Both have survived the cultural conflict in Shiraz to be, to blossom, to advance.  Both are a testament to the enduring transcendence of distinction. Zarin shares her novel artistic vision to the world despite all odds.

Conditions in her native country eventually compelled Helen to turn elsewhere for creative nourishment. “Hard work and talent are not enough for an artist to progress and blossom, creative freedom in the right atmosphere is essential,” she remarked. In the pursuit of these artistic prerequisites, she journeyed first to Europe where she displayed her works in Vienna before coming to the United States in 1993. She has continued her education first in New York and currently in Baltimore, Maryland where she resides.

Creative and Affordable Framing and Art Ideas

When it comes time for you to add a piece of art to your collection, there are a variety of options to consider. Art falls into two categories: originals and reproductions. Originals can include an assortment of mediums, such as etchings, oil on canvas, oil on paper, pastels, and more. Reproductions also have variances, as they can be numbered, and signed or left unsigned by the artist.  We have plethora of great art, all in varying mediums and price ranges.  You can check them out by clicking here.

When looking to purchase art, it is important to both distinguish what your needs are, and consider the space you are looking to decorate. If you have a large space, you may want several small pieces or just one large piece of art. Another factor to consider is style; some older and more famous artworks might be more expensive than, say, a newer, more contemporary piece of artwork such as this one:

Manus Island Tree Snail by Henry Domke looks bright and fun for any room!

Are you unsure of what type of art to buy? What would be a good investment piece? Or are you looking for some advice from experienced professionals? In any case, come visit us in Alexandria, VA. Affordable Framing Ideas:

If you fall in love with a piece of art at a flea market or garage sale grab it.  There are loads of ways to make an inexpensive piece look expensive and fit perfectly into your décor.  I was recently at Salvation Army and found a beautiful flower painting.  The frame and matting was in pretty bad shape but it was only $5!  There is nothing wrong with grabbing a bargain on something you like.  I brought it back to the gallery and picked out a small mat and new frame – ta da!  I have a perfect piece at a steal of a deal.

Another neat trick for affordable framing is to buy or find one of your favorite books with pictures in it. I am a great fan of sketches done by impressionist artist.  Just like this one done by Manet of Monet:

Monet by Manet!

Monet by Manet!

Carefully cut the pages out of your book, then add a mat and frame to it and – tada!  Gorgeous.  Local interior designer Lauren Liess did this in her home – The entryway is hung with Leonard da Vinci sketches taken from a book. The gold frames help unify the arrangement:

What a fantastic entryway, how does yours look?

What a fantastic entryway, how does yours look?

We want to help you with your project no matter its size.  Bring us a drawing of your child did or a ticket stub from your 10th wedding anniversary.  Whatever it is big or small we have the resources and knowledge to help. Be honest with us, come in and tell us your budget and we’ll make it work.  That’s why we’re framing professionals.  Don’t forget to check out what we call our smaller “Ready-made Frames.”  We make them using scraps from larger projects and they are beautiful.

If you have more creative ideas for framing or art on a budget, share them with us!

Is 50% Off Really 50% Off?

An interesting topic recently came up with a friend of mine. She had just come back from a trip to Europe with several beautiful pieces of artwork. We were at her house discussing where to hang them and both realized she should get her artwork framed. Not only would a frame protect her art, but would also showcase the beauty of the pictures.

The next step was to figure out where to get them framed. I, of course, recommended Broadway Galleries. But she told me flat-out that she thought a gallery would be too expensive, and instead was thinking about trying a larger chain such as Michael’s. Best yet, she had just received a 50% off coupon from them. She figured it had to be a steal of a deal.

Let’s chat about this for a minute, because this is a common perspective.

Remember to read the fine print of coupons!

Remember to read the fine print of coupons!

There are some chain framing stores that usually offer very large discounts or coupons … but how is the quality of the frame or the sales person recommending the frame and matting? How fast is their turnaround process? Will they have a variety of options or help you choose what is best for your budget and style preference? There are so many things to take into account!  Once you have something framed you typically intend to keep it that way for years.

To help my friend out, I did a bit of research on a few of these big companies with great discounts. I found their prices to be quite comparable to Broadway Galleries.  At Broadway Galleries we want to provide quality products, great customer service, and build customer loyalty. And at Broadway Galleries you can guarantee that your sales person and framer are experienced.

Look at all the options at Broadway Galleries

Chain stores are great for buying arts and crafts and odds and ends, and they did entice my friend with the 50% off coupon they advertised. But what does 50% off mean? 50% off the frame? 50% off the labor? Or 50% off the total cost?

Hmm is this really 50% off?

Hmm is this really 50% off?

Some coupons have specific limits to your purchase listed in fine print.  It also is apparent that some chain framing stores raise their prices when a promotional coupon goes out, which means the end result is that many people pay the same amount they would during a non-coupon sales period. Smart marketing!

Something else that breeds uncertainty is the question of where the frame is actually made. It could be anywhere.  At Broadway Galleries, all of our frames are made in our shop in the United States.

Overall framing can be a large investment but it also can be very affordable.  It simply depends on what type of materials you want.  Hopefully you will frame it once and have that frame last for generations.  At Broadway Galleries, just tell us what your budget is and we will make sure to find you the perfect beautiful frame.  This is what we do for a living, and we’re good at it.

Broadway Galleries Partners with Hardwood Artisans

We are proud to announce a new and attractive business partnership.  Broadway Galleries is expanding their reach in style.  We have partnered up with a local furniture company to keep their showroom walls fresh and beautiful.  The business is Hardwood Artisans who handcrafts stunning hardwood furniture in Culpeper, Virginia.  They have over 800 standard furniture designs that look perfect with our handmade frames.

We are showcasing art in all four of their showrooms: Rockville, Arlington,Fairfax and Culpeper.  We have even done a framing job for them of their wood shop – it is in a thick, walnut frame and looks beautiful.

Every few months we will be changing out what artist we display in their showrooms.  We currently are showing off the breathtaking photography of Fred Eberhart.  Check out this incredible piece of his:

Fred Eberhart's work in Hardwood Artisans

Fred uses a unique photo stitching technique that allows his photos to be shown very large without ruining the quality of the image.  Please click here to read our blog on his unique photography stitching.  Fred’s composition is typically of the natural environment and captures water, trees, and the sky’s luminous beauty.  Most of Hardwood Artisans furniture is finished with a natural Danish oil that does not cover up the furniture’s beautiful wood grain and fits in perfectly with Fred’s work.

Fred’s photographs work perfectly in a business entrance:

Who is your team? Learn about framing for Sports Aficionados!

Who is your team? Most folks have at least one team or one type of sport that they thoroughly enjoy, whether that means playing it or sitting back in the bleachers and watching the game. My personal favorites are: watching football (live or on TV), watching baseball live and oh one more, I also enjoy watching ice hockey live.

After following a team for several years you are bound to collect some sports memorabilia! Storing and displaying your collectible photographs and jerseys is as important to their preservation as it is to the attractiveness of their display.  Collectible photographs that are not properly protected can yellow or discolor, collect dust, scratch and even mold.

Magazines framed can reference a certain point in time.

Magazines framed can reference a certain point in time.

Damage to your collectibles can hugely affect its value, and severe damage could cause your item to become worthless.  You’ve invested money and time in building your collection, so don’t you think it’s worthwhile to ensure that it’s properly protected?

So many stores advertise products for matting and framing your photos and art pieces.  Sure, this works for family photos and non-collectible artwork, but you don’t want to attempt to try to frame your valuable collectibles.  Improper framing can be worse than no framing at all.  Because photographs are made from paper, improper mounting and framing can result in stains, spotting, folding or bending.

How about preserving peices from the NYC Marathon?

How about preserving pieces from the NYC Marathon?

Autographed photos need to be carefully and gently handled because it can be so easily damaged.  A simple rip or fingerprint can quickly decrease the value of an otherwise quality piece.  Special mounting and framing materials need to be used in order to preserve both the autograph and the image.

Amateur or inexperienced framers might use elements such as glue, spray adhesive or tape to affix or mount the picture.  These items if used can eventually stain the paper and will make it impossible to re-matt or make changes to your framing in the future.

Giants Super Bowel Signed Ticket!

Giants Super Bowel Signed Ticket!

As with poor mounting and matting paper issues, choosing the right frame for your collectible is also of ultimate importance.  Frames that require you to “slide the photo” in place cannot be used with autographed photos as there is a chance that the photo might be scratched, ripped or damaged while sliding it into place.

Quality archival frames give the framer full access to both the glass and backing making it much easier and safer to place the photo.  In choosing an archival appropriate frame, one will need to choose an acrylic or glass that protects against ultra-violet rays while allowing for full viewing.

Many of the same issues that apply to framing a photograph also apply when it comes to framing jerseys.  However, there are some unique problems and concerns to be considered in jersey framing.

Let's go Giants, Let's go!

Let’s go Giants, Let’s go!

All things considered, it is imperative that you hire the right framer for all of your collectibles. This should be a professional who has experience working with collectibles and preservation (archival) framing.  Further, the framer should be knowledgeable of, and have worked with autographs as well as photography (or collectible jerseys where applicable).

Diploma Framing! What do you know about it?

First off I would like to congratulate all the 2012 graduates! Whether you have just graduated from high school, completed your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or even a PhD degree – I am excited for you all.

Education though exciting and fun can also be a tough endeavor and it is a great accomplishment when you finally receive the piece of paper acknowledging all your hard work! Spring and summer are full of graduations and when all is said and done, when the family parties die down, and the opportunity to move on to further education or a career comes – don’t let the opportunity to show off your achievements pass.

Frame your diploma!

How about this wall of framed diplomas. Looks like a doctor’s office!

For those of you considering framing your diploma yourself – I would recommend against it. You can easily make a snafu and tear the diploma or crease it while attempting to put it in the frame. When you invest in professional framing, you will not only receive a great quality frame you will secure a quality job on overall. You most likely spent quite a bit of time and money while getting your degree why not give it the care it deserves?

Check out this unique frame with the graduate’s cap tassel.

Diplomas with aceesories are fun.

Diplomas with accessories are fun.

Usually when you go to a custom framing store you can either choose from a selection of staple frames or can customize the frame to your liking. Most places will be able to assist you in capturing just the right frame to complement your room, your lifestyle, and your budget!

Comparing between the two frames between the first frame with the image of the school would be a bit more expensive and take up more room than the second frame with a simpler style.

How about this Virginia Tech frame?

A frame for a diploma can make for a great gift and a solid investment. It is also a fantastic way to protect your documents from wear and tear. There are so many options frame-wise, you can choose a large frame with an image of the school, make it colorful with the school theme colors, or keep it simple and sleek.  Some people may want to engrave or initial the frame for personalization and you can also choose to add a gold or colored plaque on or under the frame too!

Once the favorite poses have been chosen… what should be done with the pictures? Weddings are a once in a lifetime event. The pictures are beautiful, certainly not cheap, and hung on the wall for all to see for a lifetime. Therefore, these photos deserve to be beautifully framed.

Check out this photo and frame match-up below, this would be a great anniversary gift!

Or if it was an outdoor wedding, a more casual setting is called for, with richly colored frames and mats. A family collage is a fun way to present more than one picture. If you have a lot of pictures, why pick just one? A multi-opening mat like the frame below can let you show off many pictures in one frame.

Framing wedding invitations is also a fantastic way to create a keepsake from the day. An embellished invitation with real pressed flowers arranged in a frame in a unique way makes a wonderful wedding or shower gift. New Trend on the Rise: Framing Your Wedding Dress

Summer is upon us and so is the season of weddings! I love summer weddings and the warm weather usually allows for some beautiful outdoor pictures. The neat thing about weddings are usually many lovely mementos from the day, why not frame a few things? Being able to relive the memory would be great!

I just recently went to a wedding at the Whitehall Estate in Bluemont, VA and it was an unforgettable scene.

Whitehall Manor view of the mountains

Whitehall Manor view of the mountains

While preparing for the wedding, the bride-to-be can spend weeks and maybe months trying to find that perfect wedding dress. There is the time and then the expense that goes along with it. Then the bride wears such an exquisite and beautiful dress only once. Yes, I know there are pictures and video but why not have the dress framed and hung in a special place so that she can pass by it for years to come and get reminded over and over again what a special wedding day she had.

This gift can be given long after the wedding is over. What a grand surprise it would be for your first anniversary, or even a milestone anniversary such as 10 or 25 years. You are sure to WOW her with this one of a kind gift.

Take a look at this wedding dress below in a shadow box.

Some important factors things to consider when completing framing or a shadow box for a wedding dress are listed below:

  1. When choosing the shadow box is it important to consider the glass and materials involved to best preserve the gown and other item’s original context.
  2. Even though a display box must use safe materials for your wedding gown, it must also be attractive and reflect the gown beautifully. You do not want the molding or glass taking away from the beauty of the gown.
  3. Expect to use a large amount of materials to hold floor-length wedding gowns and accessories. On average, the shadow box for a floor-length wedding gown is approximately 40 by 84 inches. Consider if you want to use the whole dress or section off a piece of the dress, such as the bodice. You could also choose to include a variety of items such the veil and shoes.
  4. Consider the following materials: Molding, Mat Board, and Fabric.
